If you want to build your own network or to connect two computers or just to connect your computer with some kind of network device like router or switch then you need a cable. Here are some tips showing you how to make RJ45 network cable.

The most used types of cables are two:  straight-through  and crossover. But how to know which of them to use. The following list shows  how to use the two different types of cables according to the types of devices and their ports.

The following connections will typically require a crossover cable:

  • computer to computer
  • computer to uplink port
  • computer to print server
  • uplink port to uplink port (hub/switch)
  • normal port to normal port (hub/switch)

In the following  situations you would use a straight-through cable:

  • computer to residential gateway/router
  • computer to normal port (hub/switch)
  • access point to normal port (hub/switch)
  • print server to normal port (hub/switch)
  • uplink port to normal port (hub/switch)

Now after we understood which cable to use let’s make it.

What we need is: network cable UTP CAT5/6 , RJ45 connectors and crimping tool.

Working with these instruments is easy. Just follow the steps bbelow:

1.Determine what type of network cable you will need and cut the necessary lenght of cat5/6 cable.

2.Carefully remove about 1 inch of the outer insulation. Be careful not to cut or damage the wires inside.

3.Untwist the pairs and arrange the wires according to the desired type of cable (crossover or straight-through). There are two standards for straight-through cables:EIA/TIA 568A and EIA/TIA 568B. Below are the diagrams for the different standards.

4.Flatten the grouped wires together tightly, between the thumb, and the forefinger.

5.Cut the wires to a length, long enough so that they will slide all the way into the RJ-45 plug easily. Ensure that all wires reach the end of the appropriate holes. Remember that a perfectly straight cut is essential here.

6.Check the wiring sequence one more time.

7.Insert the cable into the RJ-45 plug so that a small bit of the outer insulation to go into the plug along with the wires.

8.Place the RJ-45 plug  into the crimping tool and press firmly until you hear a click.

9.Test the cable using a high quality cable tester.
