Active Smart – detailed information about your hard drive
As you know every hard drive sooner or later cease to function. It’s a matter of time. Usually, the hard disk errors happen unexpectedly and the stored data can be easily lost. You can avoid loss of data if you regularly make backup copies of your files. However, it may be a complicated process especially if you have multiple hard disks with large capacity. Don’t you think it would be more convenient if you can predict approximately, how long will your hard drive live. Yes it’s possible! There is a program, called ActiveSMART that analyzes the hard disk of your computer and gives estimates of the problems that might arise.
How it works
Active SMART is a program that monitors your hard drive health status. It allows you to track the SMART parameters of your hard drive in order to detect any problems, occurring with the drive, before you lose your data. As you probably know all of the modern hard drives support S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). It is a system for communication between the internal disk drive electromechanical sensors and the host computer. These sensors collect information about various parameters like read errors rate, average time of spindle spin up, start/stop cycles count, reallocated sectors count, power-on hours, temperature and many others. Each of these parameters are defined by the drive manufacturers and have threshold values beyond which they should not pass under normal operation.
When ActiveSMART is installed, all information about the hard drive will be accepted and analyzed by the program. Once started it will keep to track the various performance parameters of your hard drive and compares them to a threshold levels. If these parameters approach to a critical values, the user will be notified about any potential disk failure immediately. SMART uses these values to calculate the TEC (Threshold Exceeds Condition) date for the drive. It’s a supposed date when a critical drive parameter will reach its threshold value. TEC date should be regarded as a “Failure date”.
ActiveSMART has build-in warning system that allows you to be notified on an impending hard disk failure. Warnings can be a pop up messages, emails ( sent by its internal mail client ) or network messages. There is also detailed log containing information about any hard drive events and all reported alerts.
