I decided to write this post after a friend asked me to install Windows on his MSI M670X  laptop ( the exact model is M670X – 055EU ). Unfortunately, the optical drive wasn’t working properly and I needed to install from usb flash drive when I found something interesting. If  you are owner of this model, then maybe you’ve noticed, that there is no option in the BIOS  allowing you to boot from usb. Actually, that’s not quite true. The option is there, but the organization of the menu is somehow strange and may confuse some of the less experienced users. Let’s see!

Enter the BIOS by pressing DEL at the start of the computer and go to BOOT tab > Boot Device Priority. As you can see there are three boot devices  ( CD-ROM, SATA Hard drive and network adapter). You can change their sequence using + or - keys ( see instructions in the sidebar ), but the interesting here is that you don’t have usb drive as an option.

Now, connect your USB flash drive and restart the computer. Go again to BOOT tab and enter the section Hard Disk Drives.

From here you can change the boot disk priority.  If your USB device is recognized properly, it must appear in the menu along with hard drive. All you need to do is to change the hard disk sequence, by placing the USB disk first.

If you go back to the Boot Device Priority menu you can see that SATA hard drive is replaced by the USB flash drive.

Finally exit the BIOS by pressing F10 and make sure you choose Yes to save the new configuration.  Now after restart, your computer should boot from the usb flash drive.
