This guide explains how to clean the cooling fan and heat sink inside a MSI M670X laptop, but it should work also for other similar models. The reason that made me think of cleaning this laptop is that sometimes it overheats and shuts down by itself without any warning. Increased noise produced by the fan is also very important sign that there is overheating. However, if you suspect that your laptop overheats you can always check its temperatures with programs such as SpeedFan or HWmonitor.

OK! Let’s start.

1. In order to access the cooling module you’ll have to remove 4 screws securing the plastic cover that covers some of the main components such as CPU, RAM module and WLAN card.

2. Disconnect the fan cable.

3. In this model the cooling module consists of two parts. There is one heat sink responsible for cooling the CPU and another one for the video chip. As you can see below the cooling fan is part of it, so if you want to access the fan you have to remove 3 screws securing the heat sink to the motherboard.

4. Carefully lift up the heat sink.

Here is a picture showing that heat sink is clogged with dust witch stops the normal airflow passing through the heat sink.

4. Now remove the other 3 screws to separate the fan from the heat sink.

Be careful not to damage or smudge the thermal pad conducting heat between the VGA chip and heat sink.
